"I grew up in a family full of artistic women and was bit by the art bug early in life. I have always loved keeping myself involved with anything that I can express my talents in. I spent 15+ years working as a Professional celebrity Makeup artist in Los Angeles and about 7 years ago began my love affair with making flowers. It wasn't long until my clients and friends were asking me to make them flowers and accessories so it was a natural move to start my own business. I am completely self taught so it's great fun for me to see how far I have come and how much my skills and techniques have improved!"

This weeks shop is from one of our most active members here on etsy twitter team. FoxyGknits, owned and created by Lois Stifel, is a beautiful shop. Within the shop you can find hand-knit, one-of-a-kind shawls, wraps and scarves that are fashioned by combining diverse yarn textures and color palettes. Designed for today’s woman, all items encompass both style and comfort. You can tell that Lois world is truly inspired from colors and textures in the "everyday world around me". In everything Lois list in her shop you can tell that her "Knitting was my avocation long before it was my vocation, and each item is hand knit with love. I take great pride in my workmanship, and if something isn’t up to my standards, it doesn’t go into my shop. "

- who or what inspires you to do your arts and crafts? to use the colors you use? -

I like to wear shawls and hats and scarves - and pick colors that I know will look good on me - and hope that the same colors will appeal to others. The members of the Etsy Twitter team are an inspiration to me with your talent and pattern ideas!

-besides the farm stand in the summer and your etsy store what else occupies your time? - haha - sorry didn't mean to laugh - but my website Sandi's T's(http://www.sandists.com/) occupies a large part of my time - because I'm always trying to make it look better, work better, add new products, etc....

(i love your sense of humor Sandi--you keep me smiling all day long! ;)

what's your favorite food? -

since I don't do a lot of cooking other than basics - my DH likes meat and potatoes and in summer sweet corn, I really don't have one favorite food - however, if I had to choose a nationality of food, I would say Mexican - let me go to a Mexican restaurant and I'm in heaven. But none of the really spicy type please!

what's your favorite book? -

Again, there is not one favorite book - but I have several favorite authors - one is Jean Auel - waiting for her next book to come out, Diana Gabaldon - with her series Outlander - waiting for the latest book in the series, of course Steven King...

1-3 things that you would like the world to know about you on my blog that isn't listed above.

I was a navy wife and traveled a lot, but I really rather stay at home. I've been here in Virginia since 1976 - came here from Portugal (stationed there) - so it seems kind of strange that I've been here that long. But when I think about relocating (my DH and I are retired and in our 60's) it seems daunting. Of course a change of scenery might not be all that bad! I'd just need to make sure to find a house with a work room large enough to hold all my fabric and yarn!

Think about how many places or times today you heard something about Going Green? Was it at the office, the grocery store, your child or a friend who spoke of it? In my house we talk about recycling everyday and I try as hard as I can to clean and recycle everything I can.

With school starting right around the corner the art rooms are in need of supplies. What can you send in or call your local school to donate? Well, lets see… at breakfast you may eat eggs. That egg carton could be used in classrooms to help students learn how to sort items or make a wonderful art project. At lunchtime you may have had a yogurt. Did you know that the schools use these in many different places? In the classrooms they use it for water, paints, and glue so they don’t spill. Other schools have a local charity that may give the school 2 - 5 cents for each (cleaned) container they receive (check your local schools newsletters or websites). Then comes dinner… You’re in a rush and you take that Healthy Choice out of the freezer and pop it into the microwave. Then into the garbage afterward, right?? Wrong. Wash it set it aside and give it to a school!! They are used for science projects or painting. All of these plastics may have the number 7 on it, but we could make a difference in our daily world instead of allowing the schools to go out and buy unnecessary supplies. You can be supporting the arts as well! Don’t want to contact the school… not a problem! Contact a friend you know who does art!

One of the books I have in my house is all about recycling. I haven’t gotten a chance to read all of it yet, but there are some really good steps about becoming green in this book that the Etsy Twitter Team has already done. Check it out!

With the amount of paper that is wasted on a daily basis, it’s no wonder that we are losing our forest and fresh air bit by bit. ACageyBee.etsy.com makes these adorable cards with paintings of girls on them. The envelopes that come with her cards are 100% recycled material. What a great way to write to a friend about an amazing book you have been reading about! Pick a card that looks like you or your friend to send to him or her. It will show your friends how much you’re thinking of them!!

According to my book, it’s a great way to go for a vintage item such as necklaces, wedding rings, etc. instead of buying something new. Why? Because metal is not being melted down to make new items. What do you need to melt down metal? Fuel. Energy. These things are becoming precious in our world. Buying vintage really helps to save the world in the long run!

Reuse your grocery bags!! When my great grandmother was around she used to take all of the plastic bags and twist, turn, and knot them until they became a door mat. Yes, a door mat! They lasted a lot longer than you would think and they cleaned her son’s boots off from the farm. (That’s what my grandmother tells me.) Grandma would be proud of me because even though I may not know how to make these amazing door mats, I use a recyclable bag every time I go to the grocery store, the mall, or even that big warehouse I love so much. The Etsy Twitter Team is throwing an eco-party, and everyone is invited!

From July 21st to July 27th, the authority on Twitter for all things handmade will be offering a summer feast of cool eco-friendly tips, suggestions, awesome handcrafted genius and a scavenger hunt with lots of “green” prizes for the winners.

Our team, which uses Twitter to expand its reach to a global audience, thinks that “Going Green” is far more than just a sales pitch. We really want to dispel the myth that items that are “green” have to be expensive or time-consuming to find, and encourage people to think of ways they can conserve the most valuable resource we have, which is the Earth itself. This is one way to really turn people on to the idea of buying responsibly and learning how to find items, which support, rather than harm, our natural resources.

We feel that supporting green initiatives are part of meeting the Etsy Twitter Team's mission to become the authority on Twitter for all things handmade. The handmade lifestyle is an important piece of the eco-puzzle and we want to be sure and share that with the rest of the world, on Twitter and off.

One on One with ThatsHeadley!

Starting this month I am going to be interviewing artist one on one about the little things we don't hear about. This week I interviewed Ginny from ThatsHeadley! She is a fellow member of the Etsytwitter Team on Etsy.

1. What inspires you to make your items/craft?

I am inspired by all the wonders and colors of nature, and the pretty stones and shiny silver I love to work with. I think I have a bit of the magpie in me!

2. Do you have a special place in your home that you work in?

Yes, I have a jewelry bench set up in my home office (more on that later), but I can take small wire-wrapping projects anywhere. But I like my bench the best.

3. What else do you do besides the crafts?

I am a full-time consultant in public health - which is why I have a home office, because I do a lot of writing and data analysis - but I also travel all around Texas for projects that I work on in infectious disease control and prevention, and in emergency preparedness. I also am a wife and mom - I love all four of my jobs!

4. If you could go any place in the world where would you go?

Oh, this is a hard one for me. I want to see so many places! But the next on one my list is Paris next spring with my daughter. We're going in March, and I can hardly wait!

5. What is your favorite item to make in your shop? and why?

My favorite item to make are my Whirled Peas! The Peas in a Pod Earrings are so light and beautiful, and proceeds from every sale go to help out the Fisher Houses, one of my favorite charities. These Houses are like "Ronald McDonald" houses, except they are for families of veterans who have to travel to receive medical care. I think it is so important for us to give back to those who sacrifice all for our country, and even though it's a small contribution, it means a lot to me to be able to help even just a little bit.

What I'm working on now...

Every week I say I'm going to write up a letter stating what I have been working on. However, I rather be doing fun things outside the house now a days. It's too nice out even this morning to be sitting in front of the computer. I plan on taking a nice walk later with the hubby.

So what have I been up too?? well... I planted all of my garden for the summer. I have lettuce, tomatoes (3 types), spinach, cilantro, parsley, rosemarry (if and when it decides to come up), yellow and red peppers. I need one more pot of soil to replant the cherry tomatoes I have. Now all of this was grown from seed this year and its nice to walk outside and see how much they have grown over night. Plus it helps me help the environment. Let face it we are only going to get more clean air in the world if we start by doing something ourselves.

I have also been very very busy with work. I am very sad to see the end of the school year come to a close. I'm going to miss the smiles from the kids when they see that they have a sub for the day.

At night I come home and look at emails which on a daily basis I have about 100-200 from just that day. After about an hour on the web I normally help make dinner, go for a walk or enjoy some quality time talking with the hubby.

When dusk falls its time for crocheting, Yankee games (on the TV), or reading a book/magazine or studying. My night normally ends about 10/11 pm. I truly do not know where the day goes.

**The picture above is my make shift studio. I normally use it to sort my yarn out for new projects, sew up large blankets, or lay out the up coming projects I would like to do. In this picture I have my Blue and Green heirloom quality blanket. It has taken me awhile to do this blanket because I keep saying it should be bigger. I now am going to make it queen sized. You can see I have a long way to go. Each box is 10x10 inches. I first make each box and then lay it out and sew them up once I have at least a row to make. You can also see the mountain dew that I need to keep my energy going late at night.

I also have been working on cup cozies--currently working on a bunch for FATHER'S DAY.

This very unique shop titled A Cagey Bee is run by artist Kris G. Brownlee – or KGB. You can truly tell in each piece of art how much KGB loves paint. Kris is a true artist of the times..she has made little reproductions of her original paintings into prints, notecards, and even little pendants with her characters so paintings can be affordable to all!!

My favorite is her little pendant--Claire-- i think this is because of the real life like features that are portrayed. I love how her hair looks, her eyes bright to the world and the camera that shows how much she enjoys sharing her life with others. It also could be that green dress because green is one of the few colors I can truly wear. My other favorites are her cards. I could see myself writing to friends, co-workers, family or just because in them. What ever your true love is please check out KGB's shop this is one artist you don't want to miss out on!

In less than 6 months my best friend of 15 years is getting married. The first thing that comes to mind is the dress then the jewelry. May 4-10: Shop of the week- Bellflower Textile

Everyday that I walk into the schools remind myself to watch where I am going to place my feet. Why you ask? because when your in an elementary school there is bound to be crayons, pencils, markers, and colored pencils on the floor. I have seen so many children step on them and have to catch themselves from falling. Above is a dream come true to help keep the pencils off the floor. It is a very fun pencil holder for children to use and can be re used for each school year. In Bellflower Textiles you will find so many bright and fun colors to meet everyone's wants/needs.

As the April 2009 fly's by I realize that I have put off doing so many things yet again. It amazes me how quickly the past few months have gone. Between work, house, twitter, etsy, ebay my state test for my teaching certificate, and my best friend getting married I have been busy busy busy. So I looked decided today is the day to sit and go over a lot of the miss used time this month.
I have already been to Lowe's to get potting soil and two new pots for the plants. On my kitchen table (its really a card table since the apartment is so small) I have several plants going. This year I plan on having sweet red peppers, yellow peppers, big boy tomatoes, plum tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, spinach, spicy lettuce, lettuce (they are a mixed bag), sunflowers, basil, rosemary, and parsley. Most of them are just starting to pop up --this is the most exciting thing in my house. My husband and I can stand there for 5 minutes just looking to see if "anything new" has grown in the last hour. He then teases me because I'm telling the plants to "grow grow". I know this is funny however, I do remember reading in some magazine that plants love attention. On the other hand this is why I need to have a dog in the house. No pets allowed though in this apartment :(
I also took 10 minutes to put away the clothes that I folded 3 days ago and pick up the pile off the floor that my husband loves to leave. (did i mention that the laundry hamper is just 2 feet away?? no?? well it is--lol).
I also decided in the past few days to stop selling my random house hold stuff (that I don't need) on ebay. I noticed that even there few people are buying. Not me though... I just got the planters you see on tv for tomatoes for a great price. (green bags that hang) Anyway, so that's been put off.
As for etsy..well I launched my new line on April 2nd. its the GO GREEN CUP COZIES line. So far my mom got one, I have one and some of the people I work with have purchased one. They all say the same thing "what a great idea to help the earth and its so simple". Simple is the best thing now a days with all the mayhem. If you haven't stopped by to see them please do. It could be your one pledge this year to help our environment.

What a Week!!

Wow this past week has been a busy busy busy busy!! Lets start with Wednesday because that's when it got busy...so I was supposed to launch my new line on April 1 (Wednesday) however, with the worm that was supposed to go out I decided to postpone it to April 2nd and not go on the computer. Talk about a hard thing to do--If your like me than your addicted to the computer.. it got worse for me when my husband went to Iraq. The Internet became like a link between two worlds. I was able to tell him anything day or night and not feel like I was "forgetting something again". It also helped him connect quickly to what I was doing so that our conversations on the phone could be on other topics. Getting off the topic again..opps!! So on April 2nd (Thursday) I launched my new line--CUP COZY I posted a few on Thursday and then more on Saturday.

Friday I was busy with house work, crocheting, and other stuff.

Saturday I decided to wake up at the crack of dawn (why I never know) and get online. The hubby was out at lacrosse practice so I had most the day to myself. So online I go and I get onto Etsy--hmmm treasury pops into my mind and I get one!! Wahoo... then the rest of the day I clean the house ...take a nap (wasn't feeling well) and watch the yankee game.

Today (sunday) I have all three of my brother-in-laws at my house. It is the first time in a long time that all four brothers are together--its nice to see them laughing and such...

With summer just around the corner I dream of taking long walks on the beach with my husband and picking up sea shells and beach glass. This has become a hobby of mine when we go for walks. When I get home I place it into a glass bowl which I have been displaying in my den. There are blues, greens, white and browns in the bowl. The picture above is a beautiful necklace that was made by ReneeSuich.etsy.com . It is a beautiful display of beach glass. One other special thing about Renee's shop is that she has one of the kind items. Her sections on beach glass and Skeleton Key Beads (one of the most popular items in her shop!) are my favorites in her shop.

HAPPY ST. PATTY'S DAY ALL!! I recently was in a treasury and figured I would post it with my st.patty's day message. I'm the one in the top left corner. Yes its me in the picture I really love this spring green colored scarf with pockets in it. I made one for myself and I go for walks with it on. I place my house keys and other in it so I can go down to the stores close by. With the economy the way it is I have been walking alot more around town. I find this scarf helps to keep the little things I need to shop with so I can walk and not worry about walking with a pocket book. blah! I recently made one in a purple for a co-worker. She told me she loves the pockets and never thought about how useful they would be in a scarf. I love feedback like that. If you would like to learn more about them please let me know. This week's shop of the week is called Emmakat,

Emmakat.etsy.com . In Emma has a variety of cool handmade items in her store. My favorite part of her store is the writing note cards and journals. She shows bold patterns to all and helps to inspire us to write. For example this journal to the left is of a rain cloud. I learned in my student teaching that pictures help to inspire children and adults to write. If I was to use this in my classroom (when and where I get it is still up in the air ;) ) I would have each one of my students take a page and continue a story I started about a rain storm. How cool would that be to inspire children to write about something we all get to see during the rainy months. As I tell my students the best story has tons of Juicy details!

To the right here is another one of her inspiring cards. With spring starting soon up here in CT/NY you see people sitting outside and putting things outside such as bird houses. Slowly the birds are returning here including the cat bird that I truly despise. (they sound like a cat that's being torched) However, I truly love the birds and all the different birdhouses that people have made over the winter. I hope you all enjoy her shop as much as I did.

Last week I missed the shop of the week so I wanted to do a brief shout out to this store--If you had a chance to look at my treasury last week then you will see the item from this store and for this weeks store..

Last week-Feb 23-March 1 : Impawsible To Resist

Maureen has a beautiful touch with her paintings to make you feel like you were there when she painted them. My favorite one is the two girls at the beach picking up what I like to think of is shells. She leaves it up to you to decide. However, if you have ever been to a beach on a blustery day you know how these two girls feel about their hats.

The second thing you should know about Impawsible To Resist is that its not just Maureen's work but also her sisters and daughters. I think this is an amazing thing because very few people in the world have time today to craft things with family. There is always an excuse--I'm too busy, I'm too tired, I can't make it such and such has come up. anyway, I think its a nice feeling to know that these girls have time to enjoy together but they also bring their joy to the rest of the world through their art. please check out Impawsible To Resist and remember that all their pictures/ideas are owned to them.

Treasury-share the love

On Friday night I sat in front of the t.v. with my husband exhausted from the long day of subbing. As we ate pizza and watched our favorite shows we caught up on the week together. We discussed how nice it was to be together for our third anniversary (he was in Iraq for the 1st two) and how much work he had done for his school classes. My husband tends to do most of his homework during the night time because well as he says "he can think" at that time. So by 5:30 p.m. he was sound asleep on the couch. I wasn't so surprised after he had been up for almost 48 hours--I have no idea how he does this I can't function after 14 hours!!
So onto the computer I went with my crocheting to do as my next step. As I made the round of emails, facebook, twitter, Ebay and then onto etsy to make sure everything was ok. After about 1/2 hour of doing all of this I wanted to see what all the etsy people have been up too. So off to the Treasury I went. I love the treasury because there are so many talented people out there. I wish I had more time in my world to craft but as it goes I don't. Just like the rest of the world I guess. Anyway when I got to the treasury it said 333... You know what that means :) Yup!! I sat and waited...and waited... and waited some more. before I knew it there was over 1,000 people on the treasury. I had never seen so many people on here before. As I waited I thought of a title I used and then it happened!! It dropped to 332..I waited a few more moments and it dropped to 331 and I was in!! There it was bright as day...TITLE__________ will be listed for 2 days. I couldn't believe it. I haven't had one in a few months because well A-I've been so busy and B- because its ALWAYS filled. So I quickly typed in my title and I was off to see who from the EtsyTwitter team I should add in. I am in LOVE with the Fingerless Gloves that Tinker and Po creates. Lisa creates her fingerless gloves from felted and repurposed merino wool, angora, cashmere or lamb’s wool sweaters. EEk!! I am so bad about these blogs right now--last week was soooooooo crazy--2 snow days off from school, not feeling well, burned my arm making carrot cake and then my finger making eggs. Did finally finish Marley and Me which I had started about 2 months ago. Decided to go back to working on a the 99 square baby blanket. I have about 52 more squares to go--not bad! FLYING ZOO TOYS!!

I am a member of Etsy--which is a website for crafters. You can find so many diffrent gift ideas on this website for anyone you can think of. Shortly after I joined etsy to shop for friends and family I started to post my own handmade items from scarves to blankets.

I then decided this is such a great website and decided to join a group and find a mentor to help me with my shop. The group I joined is called "ETSY TWITTER TEAM". Twitter is another website to blog/chat with other people througout the world.

brrr.... its really cold outside

Well its really really really cold outside today--they are saying that its feels like 15 degrees right now --I beg to differ;) I just sat down to work on my square blanket project--I currently have 4 green squares done and I am working on a blue one--it should be done by later tonight.
I should prob. also mention that I sell things on eBay too--its under the same screen name jenco13. I try to list my new items on Sat afternoons/nights. So I have about 10 listings to do later for that too.
My other hobby is to read on my days off--I am currently reading Marley and Me by john grogan. Its quite good. Unfortunately I haven't seen the movie yet--I'll prob. just wait till it comes to the Red box ( a local rental DVD vending machine--DVDs are $1.00 a day!!). Movie theater's have become too expensive lately $11.00 for a movie per person and then another $20 for the popcorn and soda!!
That's about it for now--come back soon--hopefully I have figured out a way to get the follow this blog button up-lol

Welcome to my blog--here you can see what is the newest items I will be creating!! I currently have four projects going
1- is a blocks blanket in navy blue and leaf green
2- a scarf my mom wanted made out of fun fur in a beautiful blue
3- a baby blanket in baby pink, bright pink and white
4-a custom order blanket in a periwinkle and white--(you'll have to stay tuned for this one!!!)

I always have several little (ok sometimes big) projects going. When life gets crazy I take time to work on a project--if its a really hectic day I will pick something less detailed but if I'm looking for a challenge I go for the big and detailed project.

I currently have a web page through etsy at Jenco13.etsy.com where I have several pieces of my work. I am always opened to new ideas and look forward to what types of custom orders that people ask from me. Currently most of my sales are done in person through friends of friends or family members.
